Witnesses said five gunmen stormed St. Philip's church in Ozubulu, near the city of Onitsha, at 6am local time, and opened fire on worshippers.

The police, however, said the killing was the work of a lone shooter.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Garba Umar, the Anambra State police chief, said the violence was tied to a feud within the local community.

Cultism was formed for these kind of inhuman behaviour, to fight, fish out, and bring to book this kind of heartless people. Now the wicked mafias are using them against themselves and the people they were suppose to protect. May this innocent souls rest in perfect peace. We all need to come together as one Nigeria to kick out these wicked and heartless old politician who are brainwashing our brothers to kill our love ones. Together we stand as one Nigerian, divided we fall as nobody. Think about it.

Amongst all these, the president Muhammadu Buhari is in London, governors are sharing bailout funds, works salaries are not paid, government officials have their children schooling abroad. Ministers and senators are looting our money, to pay us to kill ourselves and put tribalism war into our, so we can be thinking of kill ourselves not having to ask them for accountability on what they promise us. Think about it, open your eyes to reality before is too late.

The poor hausa man is riding okada, the poor igbo man is riding okada, the poor Yoruba man is riding okada. The poor Hausa man sleeps under the bridge as Alamajiri, the poor Yoruba man sleeps under the bridge as Alaye, the poor Igbo man sleeps under the bridge as Agbero. It is pertinent to note that the poor from all ethnic groups in Nigeria have everything in common and so are the rich. The problem is not you and me, it is those thieves in power. Ethnics is not the problem, open your eyes before is too late.

With all due respect do not allow the agitation of an Igbo man who lives in the UK, USA, of any part of Europe for Biafra make you cause the killing of an Igbo man in Anambra or Adamawa. The rich do not can about how many people we die, they hate us that much.
Do not allow the Alhajis whom children are living abroad to persuade you to go and start killing on the streets of Kano or Kaduna State. The problem in the country is not the agitation of any ethnic group but the unity of the elite and the disunity of the masses. How many times have you ever taken your agitation to question your local government chairmen? Please open your eyes to the reality before is too late.

Why have you not asked your governors through agitation how they spend bailout fund? All the governors love them, all the ex-presidents love themselves, the senators love themselves, the top government officials love themselves, all this looters love themselves, and uses us the poor masses who gave them that power against ourselves, given our children guns to kill themselves. Open your eyes to see reality before is too late.

Why can't you and I love ourselves? Why can't we combine efforts and fight this evil politicians? Why do we fight and bullying ourselves, if they can't call for peace between us why do you think they care about you? Why do we allow them the freedom we do not have? Always remember to keep it in back of your mind, a good Nigeria is better than a good Arewa, Oduduwa or Biafra. Please don't let us start a war we can't finish, in the mist of war we are all loser

"The information at the disposal of the police is that the gunman had been hired to kill a particular family person believed to be among the worshippers," he said.

Witnesses described chaos and bloody scenes at the church.

"I saw my fellow church members dead in a pool of their own blood and many others were screaming in pain," said Chukwuma Emeka who entered the church after the shooting.

A worker at the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital said 12 people have been confirmed dead, and many others with gunshot wounds were also receiving treatment there.

Local rights activist Emeka Umeagbalasi said his information about the motive largely concurred with that of the police version.

The gunmen went to the church looking for the son of a local chief, and opened fire on the parishioners when they could not find him, Umeagbalasi said.

Attacks on churches are rare in southern Nigeria, which is predominantly Christian.

Authorities said they do not believe that the armed group Boko Haram was behind the attack.

I hope the people of Anambra State we realize that this kill of innocent people is not a thing of tribalism, but a matter of wicked individual that has no love inside of them. The Ibos want Biafra, some indivduals North wants Ibo's exit, the Ibos are saying "we have investment in your areas and cannot leave them". And the fight is been cooked.

Boko Haram fighters have attacked hundreds of churches and mosques in Nigeria's mainly-Muslim north since 2009.

When are we the poor masses going to realize that tribalism is not the problem in Nigeria? It's the state governor and the local chairmen who are the big problem brainwashing people, turning citizen against each other given them guns to kill themselvies.

The rebellion has killed at least 20,000 people and forced some 2.6 million others to flee their homes, sparking a dire humanitarian crisis in the country's northeast.
